On February 22nd, 2021, Harley Davidson presented the new Harley Davidson Pan America virtually to the public. As a motorcyclist who loves Harley Davidson as well BMW, I am intent to challenge the new motorcycle 100,000 km within a short period of time. However, until the end of last month I expected, that my Pan America “S” would be subject for delivery in March, latest beginning April.
My friends from KM Harleyworld were just as surprised as I was to hear from HD, that the first delivery of the Pan America “S” – the Adventure versions – can take place in June 2021 at the earliest. This means clearly, I must wait until June and will start my 1-100.000 km challenge almost 3 months later as initially planned. KM Harleyworld have checked all possibilities for me getting the motorcycle earlier. “No chance” ☹
The arrival of my ordered HD PA is scheduled on 3rd June for delivery at customs arrival in the Harbor Rotterdam. So, there is some realistic hope, that I will turn the throttle almost mid-June earliest.
Harley Davidson will deliver some of the demonstrators to the dealers beginning May and the first “Pan America” Standard versions, means the street version without spoke tires and adaptive seat height, will be available most probably end of May too.
Anyway, it is as it is. I still do not understand why the deliveries of such a new bike, knowing all well-established competitors on the market, was scheduled towards the middle of the season.
I have taken my decision longer time ago and I am not afraid having enough time to challenge the motorcycles performance long enough during 2021 to be ready for my trip on the HD Pan America all the way up on the Road “Pan Americana” beginning 2022.
I will start right away with our tour “Gravel Fun” riding the “Pan America” over the old Ligurian military gravel passes. Will see what kind of experience I will have, especially due to the fact, that one BMW 1250HPA, one BMW GS 800 ADV, one Honda Africa Twin and one KTM 890 will join this official tour.
But, if I would be a potential customer for an adventure motorcycle, willing to purchase an adventure motorcycle now, getting started at least in April, just at the beginning of the new season, maybe I would change my mind and go for a BMW 1250, or new Triumph 1200 or new Ducati Multistrada, or even another motorcycle available instead waiting for the HD Pan America.
Therefore, I am afraid that HD has maybe developed a new motorcycle with new features and performance ready to beat the other brand on this hard market, but it seems to be crystal clear, that some potential customers will pull back due to the late delivery this year.
In addition, I have ordered my motorcycle in December 2020 into the blind, without knowing something about its performance and prices as I will run my 1-100.000 km project with my partner KM Harleyworld and consider this challenge as an ongoing adventure over 2 years pairing mainly the HDPA with the BMW 1250HPA. Other customers placing an order now or slightly later, will most probably receive their motorcycle later in the year or even beginning next year. This, because HD will deliver limited number of motorcycles to the dealers in Europe. So, hurry up, if you are an HD enthusiast with the strong wish to go for an HD “Pan America”. Yes, I am still positively surprised about the new technology and the expected performance of this new motorcycle and the final price for almost 18645,00 Euros for a new complete “Pan America-S”. So I will wait and run my program, when I have the motorcycle physically in my hands.
